Mailbox Monday #12

Mailbox Monday is hosted by Marcia at The Printed Page.

I received several books in my mailbox this week. It just so happens that most of them have an art theme to them (not entirely intentional).

From Paperbackswap.com - I am really addicted to this - if you haven't tried it out, it is totally worth it.

I, Mona Lisa – Jeanne Kalogridis
The Birth of Venus – Sarah Dunant
I Am Madame X – Gioia Diliberto
Wideacre – Philippa Gregory

I am also very excited to receive a review copy of The Creation of Eve by Lynn Cullen. I had to do a project last year at college on Sofonisba Anguissola, the first recognized female painter of the Renaissance - and this book is about her. Her life is so unbelievable and makes for an amazing story. This one is definitely worth checking out- I will post a review as soon as I finish it - but until then here is a synopsis:
A lush and compelling tale of royal intrigue and artistic longing, set in the sixteenth–century Spanish court.

The Creation of Eve is based on the true but little-known story of Sofonisba Anguissola, the first renowned female portraitist of the Renaissance. After a scandal in Michelangelo’s workshop, Sofonisba flees Italy and joins the Spanish court of King Felipe II to be a lady-in-waiting to his young bride. Sofonisba befriends the queen, only to become embroiled in a love triangle involving the queen, the king, and the king’s illegitimate half brother, Don Juan. The Creation of Eve combines art, romance, and history from the golden age in Spain in a story that asks the question: Can you ever truly know another person’s heart?

It is being released March 23, 2010.

  1. I'm curious to see what you think of Wideacre. I love Philippa Gregory's work. The Wideacre trilogy is definitely different from the Tudor pieces. It's her earlier work (if I remember that correctly). Have fun with it!

  2. I *heart* Paperback Swap! I really enjoyed the Wideacre trilogy from Gregory - it seems to be a love it or hate it series though - I'm interested in seeing what you think! I haven't read that Kalogridis, but The Borgia Bride was fantastic!
